  IMPORTANT INFORMATION
      FOR UPGRADERS

Please install this version
of Hot Potatoes 4.1 over the top
of your previous version of Hot
Potatoes. Do not attempt to run
two versions of Hot Potatoes on
the same computer.

If you are upgrading from
version 3, please read these
additional notes:

You cannot run Hot Potatoes v3
and Hot Potatoes v4 on the
same computer. If you have
version 3 on your computer,
install version 4 to the same
location so that it over-
writes version 3. If you want
to go back to version 3, you
will need to uninstall
version 4, then install
version 3 again.

Please also be aware that if
you open and save any version
3 data or config files in
version 4, you will no longer
be able to open them again in
version 3. Make sure you have

 1. What is HOT POTATOES?

HOT POTATOES is a suite of six
programs for creating interactive
educational exercises for the
World Wide Web. These are the
programs included, along with the
ypes of exercise they create:

 JBC: multiple-choice or true-false
      quizzes
 JQuiz: text-entry or short-answer
        quizzes
 JCloze: gap-fill exercises
 JCross: crosswords
 JMix: jumbled-sentence exercises
 JMatch: matching and ordering
         exercises

All of the exercises use JavaScript
and HTML for their functionality.
There are two kinds of output:
V3 output is similar to the output
produced by version 3 of Hot Potatoes,
and all will work in MS Internet
Explorer versions 3.01 and above,
and Netscape Navigator versions 3 and
above, on both Windows and Macintosh
platforms. Version 4 also introduces
a new V4 output based on DHTML,
enabling drag-and-drop and other
user-interface improvements. This
kind of output will work only on
the following browser versions:

Windows: Netscape Navigator 4.08+
         MS Internet Explorer 4.01+
Macintosh: Netscape Navigator 4.08+

You do not need to know JavaScript
or HTML in order to use these programs
-- all you need to do is to enter your
data (questions, answers etc.) and
press a button, and the programs will
create Web pages for you automatically.
It couldn't be easier!

HOT POTATOES was created by:

Stewart Arneil (Mac and Web programming)
Martin Holmes (Windows and Web programming)
 Hilary Street (Graphics).

Commercial aspects of Hot Potatoes (such
as licencing) are handled by Half-Baked
